Judgment and Poverty

First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, in order that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.
- I TIMOTHY 2:1, 2

In the Old Testament, poverty is seen as the judgment of God and a tool of God. Where there is poverty the people are to seek Him. He does not cause it; men walking in their way, despising The Way, are the cause. However, repentance and turning to Him is the answer. I am in many poor countries and always find corruption at the top that trickles down to poverty at the bottom. The moralist can try to give something at the bottom and yet will discover that neither they nor any they know have enough money to fix the bottom. Something needs to happen at the top. Who can effect change at the top? Only God can do in an instant what reform, riots, demonstrations, and international pressure try to do in a lifetime. If corrupt man sees God, he will change. Every leader of a poor country has exactly the country he wants. It is wicked and only the Almighty can touch such leaders. “Pray for those in authority.”
